About Gwalior
Gwalior is an historical place of Madhya Pradesh. It is surrounded by District Morena in the North, District Shivpuri in the south, District Bhind in the East and District Datia in the west. The District is having two sub-divisions , namely, Gwalior & Dabra. There are three tehsils, namely, Gwalior, Dabra & Bhitarwar and four Development Blocks namely, Ghatigaon (Barai), Morar, Dabra & Bhitarwar.
The rugged ramparts of Gwalior reverberate with history. Unfolding tales of grandeur can be traced back to the 6th century. Fierce battles, passionate romances and tales of valour are etched on the sandstone of this former kingdom. One such tale is of how the patron saint of the shepherds and cowherds, Gwalipa cured the king, and thus the city was named Gwalior after him.
Today, the kingdom has declined, and the monarchs are history, but the splendour of Gwalior lives on in its magnificent palaces, the glittering chandeliers, the exquisitely carved temples and the melodies of Tansen’s ragas. The romance and legend of Gwalior beckons as one traces the history of warriors, kings and poets.
It is well connected with all the major cities of India by Road, Train and also with Air.The Gwalior is blessed with Classical Music Maestro Miya Tansen. In memory of him, three days Tansen Samaroh program take place every year and the Classical music stars participate in this programme and entertain the people of Gwalior with their outstanding performance. Also the Gwalior Trade Fair take place every year in the month of December-January.
The Gwalior city was ruled by the Tomars, Marwahs and Marathas.
